About

Classes ISTD Imperial Classical Ballet The roots of Imperial Classical Ballet stem from the early days of the ISTD and the first written syllabus in 1913 which was based on the teaching of the French School from the Paris Opéra. The syllabus has now evolved to promote the English classical style and address the changing needs of Ballet dancers today.

ISTD Cecchetti Classical Ballet The Cecchetti method of Classical Ballet offers a complete and well structured system of training which caters for the small child through to the professional dancer and the future teacher.

ISTD Modern Theatre Modern Theatre dance is a rhythmic dance style which originated in America before travelling to the rest of the world. It is often seen on the stages of musical productions and is known for its theatrical qualities.

The style uses travelling steps, high kicks, leaps and turns which all need strength and flexibility. This is a highly energetic dance style.

ISTD Tap Dance This has evolved as an American dance form, popularised throughout the world, with debate about its origins coming from African dance, Irish dance and/or clog dancing. The dancer uses their feet to strike the floor, beating out different rhythms, with dancers wearing tap shoes which have small metal plates on the toe and heel to give the distinctive sound.

Tap dance is a theatrical art form often seen on stage in musicals.

Spanish Dance Spanish Dance is a complex dance form and can be categorized into six groups: Flamenco; Classical Spanish Dance; Folklore; Eighteenth Century Dances; Ballet (Classical Dance); and Castanets. By far, Flamenco is the best-known Spanish dance form due to the many dancers and musicians performing this genre. As a result, Flamenco has eclipsed the performance of other Spanish dance forms outside of Spain. Classical Spanish Dance encompasses sophisticated choreography of Classical Music by great Spanish composers. Dancers wear either Spanish dance shoes or Ballet shoes, often while playing the castanets. The dance blends Flamenco, Folklore, and Classical Ballet.

Progressing Ballet Technique This class gracefully improves your dancing muscles in an alternative way to a typical ballet class often with the use of equipment such as Yoga Balls and Stretch bands. This class will help you to develop a lean and strong abled body perfect for those studying Ballet as well as any other genre.

Pointe Class Dancing on pointe is the act of standing on the tips of the toes while performing steps from ballet. Also known as pointe work, it is performed using hard–toed and stiff-shanked pointe shoes. Dancing on pointe requires strength and skill, so prior permission from instructor is required before students begin taking pointe classes.

Contemporary Contemporary dance is a popular form of dance which developed during the middle portion of the twentieth century and has since grown to become one of the dominating performance genres for formally trained dancers throughout the world, with particularly strong popularity in the U.S. and western Europe. Although originally informed by and borrowing from classical, modern, and jazz styles, it has since come to incorporate elements from many styles of dance, but due to its popularity amongst trained dancers and some overlap in movement type, it is often perceived as being closely related to modern dance, ballet and other classical concert dance styles.

Street Street dance is used to describe dance styles that developed outside of dance studios on the streets, in schoolyards and at nightclubs. Street dancers often make up the routine as they go, and encourage the crowd and the other dancers to interact with them. Street dance is also used to describe all the hip hop and funk dance styles that began appearing in the United States in the 1970s. Most of these styles such as breakdance, popping, locking, hip hop and house dance, are still alive and evolving within the hip hop culture of today, and are seen regularly in music videos. Classes are creative and blend original hip hop styles fused with modern commercial moves to the latest hip hop controversial beats!

Acrobatic Arts Acrobatic Arts is a unique blend of dancing and gymnastic disciplines that is taking the dance world by storm. Loved by both Teachers and Students alike, Acrobatic Arts is a multi-discipline blend and is also known as AcroDance.

Musical Theatre Musical theatre is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting, and dance. The story and emotional content of a musical – humor, pathos, love, anger – are communicated through the words, music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole. This class explores all these aspects of Musical Theatre in a fun and creative way taht makes this class a popular one.

Exercise/Stretch Class A total-body stretch class. Great for relaxing,

Experience

About Us The Page Mason School of Dance & Drama began life in 1963 with a handful of students who wanted to learn Ballet with Gillian Page and Ballroom with Jean Mason.

At first classes were held at Hilderstone until the School became big enough and in 1977 the Callis Court premises was purchased.

As the School expanded it was necessary to extend and add a purpose built Modern dance studio over the existing playground of the former Thanet School House.

Together with this expansion, we added to our curriculum considerably with highly qualified staff offering a full range of Theatre skills including: Three methods of Classical Ballet (I.S.T.D. Vanganova and Cecchetti); Modern Theatre Dance, Tap, Street; Spanish National Dance (Flamenco and Regional); Singing, Musical Theatre, Progressing Ballet Technique and Acrobatic Arts.

Children can begin their dancing at 18 months old and it is the purpose of the School to provide training for leisure, pleasure and for those students who wish to enter the Theatre world as professionals or eventually train to become a qualified teacher.

Above all Page Masons is and has always been a place that brings students together of all ages to share their passions for the Arts no matter where those passions take them in life. We are a very close team with the same love and passion for Dance and teaching and we are proud to say that everyone who joins our school is and feels a part of our Page Mason family.
